Enjoy this short and adventurous tour to the North of Kenya renowned for its fantastic scenery and remoteness; far removed from the standard tourist destinations in Kenya. This tour promises great scenery, adventure in amazing destinations, and encounters with the local tribes who call Northern Kenya their home with Lake Turkana being the highlight of the tour. Please note the tour involves long drives between destinations.

Tour Details

We begin our tour in the cool and misty environs of Marsabit; before traversing the Chalbi desert towards the largest desert lake in the world (Lake Turkana). Thereafter we visit the small settlement of Ngurunit where we enjoy the scenery and adventure at the base of the Ndoto Mountains. Our final destination before returning to Nairobi is the Samburu Game Reserve with its unique group of animals only found in the North of Kenya. On this tour you will come across numerous tribes who call this remote region their home; from the vibrant Samburu tribe to the Rendille, Turkana to one of the smallest tribes in Kenya (the el molo people).

Itinerary

Day 1 Nairobi to Marsabit

6 am pick up as we begin the long drive towards Marsabit town and environs. Enjoy a scenic drive as you approach Nanyuki looking out for Mount Kenya, colorful fields approaching Isiolo, the magnificent Mount Ololokwe (Samburu sacred mountain) before arriving at Marsabit. Time permitting; we visit Lake Paradise and Little Lake inside Marsabit National Park. Here, an indigenous forest and a desert come together to create the most compelling landscape on earth. The dense forest in the park is also home to Elephants, Kudu, Water Buck and a variety of Birds. You may visit the town on foot in the late afternoon as well. Overnight in an en-suite budget hotel in town (Dinner included).

Day 2Marsabit to Lake Turkana

Early breakfast before we depart the cool environs towards Lake Turkana as we traverse the Chalbi desert with its myriad of dunes and semi-desert landscape stopping to enjoy the scenery and experience. Arrive at the great Jade Sea in the late afternoon and visit Loiyangalani town on foot. Overnight at a budget en-suite hotel (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included).

Day 3Lake Turkana

The day is spent relaxing at the nearby lodge enjoying the swimming pool (optional) after the previous long days’ drives.
Additional optional activities include; visiting the Desert Museum, El molo and Turkana village visits, enjoy a sunset boat ride on the lake or enjoy longer boat trips to South Island National Park or the Nabuyatom Crater (weather & wind dependent). Overnight back at the budget hotel in town (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included).

Day 4Lake Turkana to Ngurunit

After breakfast, we begin the long journey towards Ngurunit driving past the Turkana Windfarm. The scenery is breathtaking. Ngurunit is an oasis surrounded by the Ndoto Mountains and home to Samburu and Rendille tribes. Depending on the time we arrive; there is the option for you to enjoy a short walk up the Ndoto streams to the natural swimming pools for a swim and slide. Bring out your inner child as you enjoy this refreshing and fun experience! Overnight at basic accommodation (shared washrooms) (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included).

Day 5Ngurunit to Samburu

Enjoy breakfast as we make an optional visit to the women’s basket project to buy some souvenirs. We may visit the rock slides if the previous day did not permit before beginning the journey towards Samburu passing the magnificent Mount Ololokwe en route.
Arrive at Samburu in time for an afternoon game drive. Samburu game reserve is home to the “special five.” These animals are only found in the North of Kenya; being the Grevy’s Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk, and the Beisa Oryx. Be sure to look out for them on your game drive as well as Lions and various other wildlife.
Overnight at a budget en-suite camp located just outside the reserve (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included).

Day 6Samburu to Nairobi

Early breakfast followed by a final game drive in Samburu game reserve concentrating around the Ewaso Nyiro River; renowned for herds of Elephants wading across. Thereafter; we begin the long drive back towards Nairobi to arrive in the early evening with a drop off at your accommodation. End of services.
