Tour Details

First stop is the Rift Valley Lakes, starting with Crater Lake Naivasha; your activities here include guided boat ride and nature walk, where you see Hippos, Pelicans and over 400 bird species. From the Rift Valley we head towards the Nakuru National Park, renowned for its Water Birds and Acacia Species, where there are other additional specialties such as Hildebrandt’s Francolin, Arrow-marked Babbler, and Wailing Cisticola.

After Baringo we drive to Kongolei and the Saiwa Swamp National Park, where you spend your time exploring the Kongolei Escarpment and Saiwa swamp.

From Baringo we take you to the only remaining tropical rain forest left in Kenya, the Kakamega Forest. Heading out early in the morning with local guides you will be able to enjoy the local Colobus and Debrazzar Monkeys and the plethora of exotic birds.

Itinerary

Day 1Nairobi to Hells Gate National park

We begin our safari from Nairobi towards the Rift Valley lakes making a brief stop at the escarpment to enjoy views of Mount Longonot and Suswa in the far distance. We arrive Hells’ Gate National Park; where more than 100 bird species have been recorded. The cliffs still attract several nesting raptor species including Egyptian and Rüppell’s vultures.

Day 2Crescent Island Game Sanctuary

Breakfast before we enjoy a 1-hour boat ride looking out for hippos and pelicans enroute to Crescent Island Game Sanctuary for a guided nature walk (approx. 2 hrs).

Some of the birdlife residents at the Crescent Island are the fish eagle, herons, ospreys, black crakes, and lily-trotters. The sanctuary is also home to numerous herbivores you will walk amongst; bushbuck, zebras and numerous gazelles.
The afternoon is spent at leisure observing birds along the lake shore and relaxing by the pool.

Day 3Lake Naivasha to Lake Nakuru

Breakfast before we depart for nearby Lake Nakuru National Park to enjoy game drives and a boat safari on the lake.
We enjoy the guided boat safari with lunch on board which begins at 12pm and takes approximately 2.5hrs. The boats are suited to the needs of photographers and non-photographers who want to have an exclusive experience in a Bird-watchers paradise and photographic location. In 2005 Lake Nakuru park was branded a “Bird watchers paradise” due to the availability of the various bird species it hosts both aquatic and terrestrial (about 450 bird species). Enjoy an afternoon sundowner experience with snacks and a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages before we transfer back to the lodge.

The park has additional specialties including Hildebrandt’s Francolin, Arrow-marked Babbler, and Wailing Cisticola and is one of the best places for Lappet-faced Vulture. The additional highlight for this park is the endangered Black Rhino. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included)

Day 4Lake Nakuru to Lake Bogoria

Early morning breakfast as we depart the park viewing game towards Lake Bogoria.
The small saline Lake Bogoria is home to various birds and depending on the time of year numerous Lesser and Greater Flamingos; a wonderful sight of pink. Plenty of other water birds are easy to spot, and the call of a fish eagle is never far off.

Day 5 Lake Bogoria to Lake Baringo

Early breakfast before departing towards Lake Baringo to enjoy a 2-hour Boat Excursion on the lake in search of hippos and numerous bird species. For the remainder of the day you can spend enjoying the various optional activities and Bird Watching around lodge.

Optional Activities: – Cultural Tour to visit the Njemps / Pokot tribes, visit the nearby Snake Farm, Swim at the nearby Lodge

Day 6Lake Baringo to Saiwa Swamp National Park

Enjoy breakfast before we depart towards the western part of Kenya to the market town of Kitale. Nearby is the excellent birding locality of Saiwa Swamp where bird life is abundant. Water birds include the lesser jacana, grey heron and African black duck among others. The forest shelters the Narina trogons, one of Kenya’s most spectacular forest birds. Watch out for the collared and orange-tufted sunbird, sipping nectar from the flowers of the forest edge. It is also the habitat of the rare and endangered semi-aquatic Sitatunga antelope and as a preserve for the rare De Brazza’s monkey.

Day 7Kongolei and Saiwa Swamp National Park

We have a full day exploring Kongolei Escarpment and Saiwa swamp. At Kongolei, there are several dry country birds scarce elsewhere, including Chestnut-crowned Sparrow-weaver, Lesser Blue-eared Starling, White-crested Turaco and Brown-rumped Bunting. Saiwa is a good site for Blue-headed Coucal, Double-toothed Barbet, Hartlaub’s Marsh Widow-bird, Black-throated Wattle-eye and Splendid and Purple Glossy starlings. Day 8Kakamega Forest

Departure after breakfast and proceed towards the only remaining tropical rain forest in Kenya, Kakamega Forest. The forest is home to several hundreds of species of birds, snakes, monkeys, bushbucks, duikers, countless tree species and natural glades.
The species include: over 380 species of trees, 330 species of birds, 27 species of snakes, 7 primates, over 400 species of butterflies and several mammals. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included)

Day 9 Kakamega Forest

This is a full day exploring Kakamega forest in the company of a local guide with early morning the best time to get a sighting of Colobus Monkey and Debrazzar Monkey. The number of birds is incredible and includes the Great Blue and Black–billed Turacos, Grey Parrots, numerous Barbets, several Woodpeckers, Scaly-throated and Thick-billed Honey Guides, Turner’s Eremomela, Banded and White-Chinned Prinias, Blue and Dusky Crested Flycatcher, Chaplin’s Flycatcher, several Greenbuls and Illadopsises, Yellow bill, Bar-tailed Trogon, Equatorial Akalat, Black-and-White Casqued Hornbill, Snowy-headed and Blue-shouldered Robbin-chats and many more. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included)

Main Activities: – Bird watching on foot and Monkey Spotting.

Day 10Kakamega Forest to Nairobi

Early breakfast before we begin the long drive back towards Nairobi to arrive in the early evening.
Drop off back at your hotel. End of services.
