Laikipia and Samburu Highlights

Laikipia and Samburu is a 5 days’ safari for those who want to “get away from it all” and spend time in the more remote Northen destination of Laikipia and Samburu game reserve. You will spend time with the local Masai and Samburu morans listening to their stories as you enjoy walks and other traditional activities. discovering the Samburu’s scenery, its wildlife and its lifeline, the almost perennial Ewaso Nyiro River.

The river and its’ brown water (from which its name derives) dictates the landscape; when it flows its wide banks are lined by swathes of green attracting an amazing variety of wildlife. By the side of the river the forest shade is home to Elephant, the Long-Necked Gerenuk, Reticulated Giraffe and the occasional Leopard.

Itinerary

Day 1 Nairobi to Laikipia

Laikipia and Samburu Safari starts in the morning heading north via the shoulder of Africa’s second largest mountain, Mt Kenya. Look out for Mt Kenya peaks jutting through the clouds. We make a brief stop at the equator point and Nanyuki town for some last-minute shopping.

Proceed to Lewaso through the Oljogi Conservancy route driving through great scenery as we arrive the remote Naibunga conservancy in Laikpia in time for late afternoon tea.

Other activities include Bao Game by traditional Samburu men, traditional fire making, visit to a local medicine man, “club” throwing competition, honey harvesting experience among other traditional activities.

Day 2Laikipia (Naibung’a Community Conservancy)

After breakfast you will embark on a walking safari in the company of one of the guides which culminates at one of the community projects run by the local women supported by the lodge. Look out for giraffes, zebras and other herbivores.
Enjoy lunch by the banks of Ewaso River. After lunch you will enjoy a game drive en route to the camp for afternoon tea and a siesta. Later there will be dinner with entertainment from the local Samburu Morans. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included)

Day 3Laikipia to Samburu Game Reserve

After breakfast you will check out from the cottages and proceed to Samburu national park with packed lunches as you enjoy a game drive enroute to the lodge. Arrive in time for four o’clock tea and snacks – Dinner will be served by the river bank with entertainment from local Samburu Morans.

Day 4Samburu Game Reserve

After breakfast you will have leave for an extensive game drive returning to the lodge for late lunch – spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing by the pool with a cool drink

Samburu is part of a lava plain that includes a diverse landscape of thorn scrub, red dirt, dried river beds, broken volcanic rock, steep hills, and rocky outcroppings. The region is home to the uncommon Grevy’s Zebra, Gerenuk Antelope, Somali Ostriches, Lions and Oryx, Elephant, Crocodile and numerous bird make excellent sighting. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included)
Dinner and overnight back at the lodge.

Day 5Samburu to Nairobi

After breakfast we make a final visit to a Samburu village to get an understanding of their way of life before departing back towards the Central Highlands and Nairobi arriving in the late afternoon as we finalize the Laikipia and Samburu Safari. The Samburu tribe, just like the Maasai are a semi-nomadic people. Cattle, as well as goats, sheep and camels, play a vital role in the Samburu way of life and culture. We arrive back in Nairobi in the late afternoon with drop off back at your hotel.
