Tanzania & Rwanda Highlights

Taking the less travelled route through Tanzania and Rwanda visiting the Tarangire National Park, home to numerous Elephants, then to Lake Manyara Park with its rich birdlife and Tree Climbing Lions. From there it is onwards to the Serengeti following the migrating herds as they travel the plains in search of new grazing, spending the last couple of days in Tanzania, perched 7,500 ft above sea level, on the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater. After descending into the crater to discover a few of the 25,000 animals that live here, it is then into Rwanda to explore the Virunga Foothills and Rainforest to experience the Rwandan Mountain Gorillas in their natural habitat.

Tour Details

On arrival you will be taken down to Tarangire National Park, where the Tarangire River provides a dry season lure for animals and some interesting game viewing encounters. From here you will be taken to Lake Manyara Park which has a rich bird life, the infamous Tree Climbing Lions and numerous Hippopotamus, all can be seen at a much closer range than many other places you may visit. After enjoying a day’s game drive we head towards the Serengeti where you will spend the next two days relaxing and exploring the vast park on morning and evening game drives. You also have the option to take an early morning Balloon safari followed by a champagne breakfast to complete this magical experience.

After the Serengeti we head to the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater Rim, 7,500 ft above sea level. You will be able to take your sundowners at your lodge which is perched on the rim of this Garden of Eden with the most unbelievable views down to the crater floor. It is an early start the following day as this is when you spend the entire day discovering a significant number of the 25,000 large game animals and its Lions, as this is where you will find the largest concentration anywhere in the world living in the Ngorongoro Crater.

After partaking in either a guided hike to the Endoro Waterfalls or a biking tour in the settlement of Karatu we head to Kigali in Rwanda. And from here we head to the Volcanoes National Park where you will spend your last two days exploring the foothills of the Virungas Rainforest where the Mountain Gorillas live. Experienced Ranger Guides lead you through the foothills in search of these shy and gentle giants and though it is strenuous, it really is an experience of a lifetime. Once you find the family you spend time watching the Gorillas adults feeding their babies whilst the other youngsters play together with the Silverback overseeing his family at all times.

Itinerary

Day 1Arusha to Tarangire Park

After we pick you up from either your hotel or the airport we drive down towards the wildlife paradise of Tarangire National Park for a full day’s Game drive. The park becomes most active during the dry season between July and November,, when large herds of game are attracted to the Tarangire River. We enjoy dinner and depending on your choice you will stay at either the Lodge or Tented Camp. (Lunch & Dinner are included)

Days 2Tarangire to Lake Manyara Park

Today you will be taken on a dawn game drive in Tarangire, before arriving back for a hearty breakfast. Mid morning we head towards Lake Manyara National park where we enjoy another day of game viewing and regardless of the direction we approach Manyara from, the view is always fantastic. This shallow lake is home to rich bird life, Tree Climbing Lions and many many Hippopotamus, which you will see at closer range than many other parks. We enjoy dinner and depending on your choice you will stay at either the Lodge or Tented Camp. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included)

Day 3 Serengeti

After breakfast we drive to the great Serengeti National Park, viewing game en route and arrive at the Seronera area of Serengeti in the late afternoon. The Central Serengeti is the most popular region in the reserve for its abundant wildlife, large numbers of big cats and quintessential landscapes of Acacia studded Savanna. The resident wildlife make this part of the Serengeti a fantastic all year round destination. This evening we enjoy dinner and depending on your choice you will stay at either the Lodge or Tented Camp. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included)

Day 4-5Serengeti

The next two days are spent relaxing and exploring the vast park on early morning and late afternoon game drives in the Seronera area, heart of the Serengeti Plain, which will enable you to spend your days follow the migratory herds and look for the ‘Big 5’. The migration passes through the area in the months of April to June and October to December, so wildlife viewing will be particularly rewarding.

You may even choose to enjoy an early morning balloon safari over the plains followed by champagne breakfast at the end of this magical experience. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included)

Day 6Serengeti to Ngorongoro

Breakfast at leisure as we depart viewing game towards the Ngorongoro. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area spans vast expanses of highland plains, Savanna, Savanna woodlands and forests holding a vast amount of wildlife and semi nomadic Maasai pastoralists. We will arrive Ngorongoro Crater; the world’s largest caldera and spend the night on the edge of the crater rim enjoying stunning views. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included)

Day 7Ngorongoro Crater Tour to Karatu

We take an early breakfast before our experienced guide takes you for a full day Crater Tour. The area contains over 25,000 large animals including Black Rhinoceros, Wildebeest and Zebra, not to mention Eland and Grant’s and Thomson’s Gazelle. Interestingly this Crater also has the densest known population of Lions in the world. Further up in the Rainforest near the Crater rim, you will find Leopard, Elephant, Mountain Reedbuck, Buffalo, Spotted Hyena, Jackal, and Cheetah. Tonight we spend it in the lush settlement of Karatu. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included)

Day 8Karatu Day Trip; then flight to Kigali

After a busy few days it is time to take a leisurely breakfast before enjoying the activities offered at the lodge while you await your transfer to Rwanda. Your transfer to Rwanda is in the late afternoon to Kilimanjaro Airport, where you catch the scheduled flight to Kigali., where you will be welcomed by your Safari Guide who will then drive you to your hotel. (Breakfast & Lunch included)

Optional Activities: Endoro Waterfall Hike: A guided Walking Tour to enjoy the spectacular views of the Endoro Waterfall and to the famous Elephant Caves; Your guide will share fascinating stories on how and why elephants have dug up the earth for the last 150yrs to ingest the vitamin and mineral rich soil; A Karatu Biking Tour, where you can get some exercise at your pace, interact with the local people and explore the beautiful landscape of the Ngorongoro Highlands. We recommend that you hit the trail because it’s a great experience to get out and see rural Tanzania.

Day 9 City Tour of Kigali, drive to Volcanoes National Park

Today is a thought provoking day where your Guide will share with you some of the events that took place leading up the Rwandan Genocide. You will taken on a guided city tour to explore Kigali, your first stop is the Gisozi Genocide memorial, the a resting place of thousands killed during the genocide and a reminder of the dark past that Rwanda has endured and survived. Your Guide will also let you experience and explore a local market in town. After stopping for a refreshing lunch, we drive to the Lodge in Musanze, near Volcanoes National Park, where you will be able to enjoy scenery en route. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included)

Day 10 Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Today we get up early to drive to The Volcanoes National Park where you will be briefed for Gorilla trekking. A thrilling trek through the refined foothills of the Virungas, led by an experienced ranger Guide providing you with inspiring views in all directions. The Rainforest is alive with calls of colourful birds, the chatterings of the rare Golden Monkey and you will be besieged with fresh spoor of the mountains’ elusive populations of Buffalo and Elephants. Gorilla trekking is quite strenuous but more than worthwhile if you manage to encounter these gentle giants. Spending time watching Gorillas and watching the adults feeding their young ones whilst and the youngsters play is an experience of a lifetime. We normally allow you to spend about an hour photographing the Gorillas, before leaving them in peace to return to the Lodge for the dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included)

Day 11Volcanoes National Park to Kigali

You have the choice today to either relax at the lodge or enjoy a tour to track the Golden Monkeys in the Bamboo Forest, another highlight of Volcanoes National Park.

The Volcanoes National Park, home to Golden Monkeys is a local endangered subspecies of the Sykes Monkey, also known as the “Blue Monkey” and is endemic to the high altitude forests of the Volcanoes National Park Area. The Monkeys are playful yet inquisitive and spend their time leaping from Bamboo branches or frolicking on the Forest floor. They have over the years overcome their initial shyness to accept their daily visit by researchers and tourists and are usually happy to play nearby. After trekking, we return to the Lodge to freshen up before driving back to Kigali where we stay the night. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included)

Day 12Kigali

Depending on your departure flight time, you will be transferred from the hotel to Kigali international airport for your flight home. (Breakfast included)
